For Fall/Winter 2026 Haute Couture, Rahul Mishra looked inward, presenting what he described as his “most India-inspired collection” to date. Titled DEVI: The Eternal Muse, the collection draws from centuries of Indian art, transforming ancient temple sculptures into contemporary couture while celebrating femininity through the lens of craftsmanship.

Inspired by landmarks such as the Ajanta Caves, the Tarakeshwara Temple, and centuries-old stone carvings of dancers and celestial figures, Mishra explored how beauty has been preserved in Indian sculpture for generations. Rather than recreating these monuments, he reinterpreted their forms through embroidery, draping, and modern couture techniques.

Turning Stone into Softness

Throughout the collection, garments echoed the sculptural quality of carved granite, sandstone, bronze, and copper. Body-skimming gowns featured trompe-l’œil drapery that appeared chiselled from stone, while architectural silhouettes referenced temple arches and sacred motifs. Despite their monumental appearance, the garments remained remarkably fluid, highlighting Mishra’s belief that couture should celebrate, rather than conceal, the female form.

The runway itself reinforced this vision, with sculptural headpieces inspired by ceremonial figures creating the illusion that ancient statues had stepped into the present.

Couture as Living Sculpture

Exceptional craftsmanship remained at the heart of DEVI. Traditional Indian embroidery techniques, including zardozi and dabka, were combined with crystals, bugle beads, and precious stones to recreate the textures of weathered stone and metal. Every garment demonstrated how couture, much like sculpture, is built through patience, precision, and thousands of hours of handwork.

The collection also marked Mishra’s first venture into fine jewelry through a collaboration with Tanishq. Featuring natural diamonds and geometric motifs inspired by Indian architecture, the pieces were designed as natural extensions of the garments rather than standalone accessories.

A Celebration of India’s Enduring Craftsmanship

More than a couture presentation, DEVI: The Eternal Muse served as a tribute to India’s artistic heritage. Traditional sculptor Sumant Kumar created ceremonial-inspired headpieces, while milliner Stephen Jones contributed ethereal veils that balanced history with modern elegance. An original soundtrack recorded inside the Ajanta Caves further immersed audiences in the spiritual atmosphere that inspired the collection.

With models including Fan Bingbing and Rei Ami on the runway, Rahul Mishra demonstrated that couture can preserve cultural heritage while speaking to a global audience. Through DEVI, ancient sculptures are no longer confined to temples—they are brought to life through movement, craftsmanship, and the women who wear them.
