Growing up in Bordeaux, France, Olivier Rousteing’s childhood was shaped by memories of his mother’s trench coats, family picnics on the grass, and the region’s celebrated wines. These formative experiences served as inspiration for Balmain’s Fall/Winter Women’s Runway 2024 – an absolutely mesmerizing collection.

Paying homage to his upbringing, grapes were prominently featured in various aspects of the collection, adorning printed silk dresses, intricately worked into bead and crystal designs, dangling from chandelier earrings, and even fashioned into bag charms, brooches, and metal clutches. A rich tapestry of textures brought each look to life, incorporating velvet, plissé, furry sleeves, and glass bodices. Playful references to escargot were woven throughout, from statement earrings to belt fastenings, embracing the whimsy of Rousteing’s childhood memories.

The collection also cleverly evoked nostalgic picnic vibes through basket bags, cork leather, and gingham prints, juxtaposed against luxurious floor-length dresses and fluffy outerwear. Rousteing reimagined trench coats, a nod to his mother’s influence, infusing them with power shoulders and glamorous hardware reminiscent of Pierre Balmain’s signature style.

Beyond the literal nods to his childhood, the collection celebrated the beauty of aging, symbolized by the grapes and reflected in the diverse range of models showcased on the runway. Rousteing’s deliberate pace and dedication to craftsmanship sent a powerful message that true beauty deepens over time, much like a fine wine.

Drawing on Bordeaux’s graceful elegance and Pierre Balmain’s “New French Style,” Rousteing crafted a collection for women of all ages, reinterpreting traditional silhouettes for the modern-day consumer. Trench coats took center stage, updated with contemporary twists, while traditional market bags were elevated into luxurious accessories.

Not printed, not jacquard. My personal highlight of the collection is its mastery in textile, with every garment meticulously crafted to embody the essence of Balmain. Rousteing encouraged close inspection of each piece, highlighting the intricate beading and embroidery that adorned the collection.
