In celebration of his brand’s 10th anniversary, Robert Wun unveiled his latest collection, embodying more than a mere return—it represents a heartfelt homecoming, a sentiment intricately woven into every design.
Born in Hong Kong and now based in London, designer Robert Wun has always considered Hong Kong his true home. In an interview, Wun reflected on the concept of the “circle,” often describing his journey as a “full circle.” This fashion show, he explained, represents the closing of that circle. “Coming home has given me the chance to reflect on everything I’ve accomplished over the past decade… I remember how my love for fashion was first sparked in Hong Kong and how I persevered through all these years.” His memories of Hong Kong have profoundly shaped him, whether recalling treasure hunts in Sham Shui Po, transforming vintage pieces from second-hand shops, or cherishing moments with his grandmother. Wun emphasized, “Design is deeply intertwined with my memories of Hong Kong and my connection to this city.”

When asked about the show’s theme, Wun shared, “It’s about my grandmother, about Hong Kong women, and the resilient spirit they embody—strong yet graceful.” His goal is to create designs that “Hong Kong people can instantly connect with at a glance.” He also emphasized that every aspect of the show—from the venue and creative team to the hair, makeup, model selection, and music—will be “100% made in Hong Kong.” Many of those involved are lifelong friends who have grown up with him and supported his journey, along with former collaborators reuniting for this meaningful occasion.

One of the show’s most unforgettable pieces was the Grandmother’s Embrace. The deep blue gown features sculptural arms cradling a baby—a heartfelt tribute to Wun’s grandmother, who passed away from COVID-19 in 2021. The gown symbolized the warmth, strength, and permanence of a grandmother’s embrace, serving as a visual representation of love that transcends time and honoring the woman who profoundly influenced Wun’s life.

My favorite piece of the show was the return of the iconic the Bleeding Love, now reimagined with a fresh perspective. Originally inspired by his sister’s surgery, the concept was reshaped to merge beauty with art. This season’s version featured a striking interplay of blood-red hues and soft whites, creating a captivating balance between fragility and strength, suffering and elegance. The dress seemed to move between opposing forces, embodying an emotional complexity that only Wun could bring to life.
The twist of the Bleeding Love
Wun’s ability to weave the past into the present was evident in his use of custom rose prints and jacquards, a nod to his early days thrifting in Hong Kong. Inspired by the nostalgic “grandma shirts” familiar to locals, these prints evoked a sense of memory and tradition. Yet Wun reinterpreted them in his signature pleated dresses, blending familiarity with innovation. The result was a playful reflection of his roots, reminding us that great fashion often begins in the most unexpected places.
Robert Wun’s Homecoming Collection is hands down my favorite fashion show of 2024. It beautifully captures how seemingly small things shape our identities, weaving them into a deeply personal narrative. The storytelling is so powerful that it inspires audiences to reflect on their own roots and pay tribute to where they come from.
