In a heartfelt announcement shared on Instagram, John Galliano revealed his decision to step down as creative director of Maison Margiela after a transformative 10-year tenure. While the designer did not disclose his next steps, he assured fans that “when the time is right, all will be revealed.” Expressing immense gratitude, Galliano reflected on his journey at Margiela, calling it a place where he rediscovered his creative voice.
Galliano’s departure comes on the heels of a triumphant finale year, highlighted by his acclaimed Spring 2025 Couture show in Paris. The collection, staged beneath the Pont Alexandre III bridge on a rainy night, showcased Galliano’s signature theatricality with dreamlike ensembles and mesmerizing beauty creations by Pat McGrath. The show went viral, solidifying his status as a fashion visionary. In addition, a behind-the-scenes book and a documentary on the making of the collection debuted earlier this year, offering an intimate look into Galliano’s creative process.
When Galliano joined Margiela in 2014, he was seeking redemption after a public fall from grace following an antisemitic outburst that nearly ended his career. Four years into his sobriety, he found a second chance with the support of Renzo Rosso, chairman of Margiela’s parent company OTB Group. In his statement, Galliano expressed deep gratitude to Rosso, saying, “The greatest, most precious gift he gave me was the opportunity to once again find my creative voice when I had become voiceless.” He credited the role with saving his life and providing a “safe space to create.”
During his tenure, Galliano redefined Maison Margiela, turning it into one of the most cutting-edge couture houses in the world. His innovative designs, theatrical presentations, and bold artistry pushed the boundaries of contemporary fashion while staying true to the house’s avant-garde DNA. Galliano also championed themes of forgiveness and resilience, often addressing his personal journey and the importance of support within the fashion community.
Galliano’s exit marks a significant moment not just for Margiela but for the fashion industry as a whole. As one of the most influential designers of his generation, his next move is highly anticipated. Reflecting on his time at Margiela, he wrote, “My wings mended, and I better understood the all-consuming act of creativity.” While his successor has yet to be named, Galliano leaves behind a legacy of reinvention, resilience, and artistic brilliance.
As he closed his statement, Galliano reminded the world of his enduring passion for beauty and balance: “Together, we are driven by beauty—the quest for balance, construction, and the lightness of a feather. Thank you.”
