Cate Blanchett is leading the charge for sustainable fashion in Hollywood, and she’s doing it one creative step—or spoonful—at a time. At the Los Angeles premiere of her new film, Borderlands, held at TCL Chinese Theatre on Tuesday, Blanchett stunned in a custom-made outfit by Swedish designer Ellen Hodakova Larsson. The centerpiece of the look was a backless halterneck top crafted from 102 spoons, sourced directly from Stockholm and meticulously layered to create a unique, armored effect. She paired the striking top with black reconstructed tapered pants and black leather pumps.

Since founding her brand Hodakova in 2021, Larsson has committed to redefining fashion through the repurposing and upcycling of materials, a mission that closely aligns with Blanchett’s environmental values. For years, Blanchett has used her platform to advocate for sustainability in fashion. In a 2020 interview with WWD, she commented on the industry’s excess, noting, “When you know the world is consuming 18 billion pieces of clothing a year, which is up 400 percent from a decade ago, you think, this is not working.”

At the Borderlands event, Blanchett’s choice of attire by Hodakova—an outfit made from antique spoons—underscored her commitment to sustainable fashion. Hodakova, known for using heirloom objects in her designs, aims to build the first fully sustainable fashion house, promoting circularity by converting old materials into luxurious, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Blanchett’s dedication to sustainability is well-documented. She has repeatedly worn the same red carpet looks on multiple occasions—a rare practice in Hollywood. For instance, she re-wore a custom Alexander McQueen suit to two different film premieres, four years apart. Beyond her fashion choices, Blanchett has also promoted sustainability in other areas, such as during her tenure as artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, where she oversaw the installation of solar panels on the rooftop of its historic building in 2010.
