After 13 years of being the creative director of Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton officially left the brand after her last show – Spring/ Summer 2024 Collection at Paris Fashion Week on September 30th, 2023.

After her graduation at the prestigious Central Saint Martins, Burton started as a student intern at Alexander McQueen and worked her way up to become head of womenswear design in 2000. With her attention to details and excellent skills in tailoring, Burton quickly earned McQueen’s trust and became the only assistant he ever had. After his tragic death in 2010, Burton became the successor and through her own personal artistic touch and vision, she continuously inspires women by creating a list of essentials for contemporary powerful women. Her understanding of English craftsmanship and legacy is well demonstrated in Kate Middleton’s wedding dress in 2011, drawing limitless global attention and marking the turning point for the brand.

In a press release, she claimed: “I am so proud of everything I’ve done and of my incredible team at Alexander McQueen. They are my family, and this has been my home for the past 26 years.”
After her final show, Kering appointed Sean McGirr – head of menswear at JW Anderson – as the next creative director. This announcement, however, raised a great deal of controversy as it leads all of Kering’s creative directors to now be all white and male.
