On May 31st, Donatella Versace was presented one of the country’s highest honors, the title of Grand Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, in Milan. The title is awarded to individuals who have distinguished themselves in literature, the arts, the economy, public service, or in social, philanthropic, and humanitarian activities. For Versace, it acknowledged her impact on Italian fashion and culture, as well as her humanitarian efforts.
Donatella Versace Receiving the Award
“I am hugely honored to be receiving this award from the President of Italy,” said Versace in a release. She added: “It is a recognition not just for me but for the company we founded over four decades ago, for my fantastic team, and for the global Versace community who champion ‘Made in Italy’ every single day.”
Versace is well-acquainted with numerous fashion awards and accolades. However, the honor she received today from the Italian Republic is particularly meaningful. She was nominated for the award by parliamentarian and activist Alessandro Zan, partly due to her vocal support of LGBT rights. As Versace noted: “On the eve of Pride month, this award also recognizes the very urgent need to champion minority voices, freedom of expression, and inclusivity both here in Italy and globally. Tolerance, understanding, and unconditional love have never been more important in our world.”
