At the London premier of Dune: Part 2, Zendaya topped her fashion peak moments with a robotic suit from Thierry Mugler’s 1995 haute couture fall collection. Law Roach, the image architect, describes this as method dressing, which is similar to method acting. We can all see from the Dune’s cast and their meticulous effort in glamming up in gowns that perfectly features their characters in the movie. Their press tour dressing is full of sci-fi aesthetic mixed with the desert setting and we are all living for it.

Although the archival robot suit debuted nearly 30 years ago, the outfit feels the most relevant at the premier of a science fiction film that features intergalactic politics, enormous spacecrafts fueled by psychedelic drugs, and futuristic weapons of war. After the press release, fashion fanatics globally have been in a heated debate over how the star managed to source the amor-esque gown as it has never been shown off the runway. The suit was named “Maschinenmensch” or “Machine Human” after the automaton character in Thea von Harbou’s 1925 novel, Metropolis, a work of fiction set in a dystopian city. Mugler’s aesthetic reflects both his prescient concerns about how emerging technology may affect the human form and his fascination with the nexus of fashion and machinery. It is undoubted that the clear-paneled cutouts on the chest, abs, legs, arms, and backside perfectly capture the futuristic vintage style.

The suit was designed over the course of six months in tandem with Mugler talented collaborator and artist, Jean-Jacques Urcun. According to Vogue, the collection was described as “frightening and tantalizing image for the dawn of the Internet age, and a fitting end for this list of the nineties’ most unforgettable fashion shows.”
