The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vogue have unveiled the theme for the 2025 Met Gala: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s groundbreaking book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, this exhibition marks a significant step in the Costume Institute’s commitment to celebrating diversity and addressing historical biases in fashion.

Black Dandyism

The exhibition will delve into the evolution of Black Dandyism, tracing its roots from the 18th century to modern-day interpretations in cities like London and New York. By exploring the profound connection between clothing and the formation of Black identities within the Atlantic diaspora, it highlights how style became a form of resistance and self-expression. According to Miller, Black Dandyism has always been “a strategy to rethink identity and reimagine the self,” even during times of enslavement when personal agency was stripped away.

Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, expressed the importance of this exhibition: “It marks a crucial step in diversifying our exhibitions and collections, making fashion at the Met a gateway to access and inclusivity.” This is the first menswear-focused showcase since 2003’s Men in Skirts and the first to center on race, with Miller serving as a guest curator.

Met Gala 2025 hosts

The Met Gala itself, set for the first Monday in May 2025, will be co-hosted by Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and A$AP Rocky, with LeBron James serving as an honorary co-chair. While the exhibition theme will influence the event’s attire, the official dress code will be announced closer to the date.

“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” aims to celebrate the enduring legacy and bold creativity of Black men in fashion, from trailblazers like André Leon Talley and Dapper Dan to modern icons like Dennis Rodman and Young Thug. It also acknowledges how these figures challenged societal norms and expanded the perception of Black identity through fashion.

This exhibition promises to honor the artistry, resilience, and cultural impact of Black Dandyism, ensuring it holds a prominent place in the history of fashion.
